Our Responsibility

Supporting the inclusion and participation of disabled people is a shared responsibility. Grünenthal has a special moral responsibility to helping those affected by Thalidomide. In addition, we also believe it is our duty to keep the memory of this tragedy alive and to present and contextualise what happened in a comprehensible way. On this page, we provide information on the subject of Thalidomide and the support available to those affected today.

The Thalidomide tragedy and Grünenthal’s moral responsibility

The Thalidomide tragedy continues to have an impact today – in the lives of those affected, in the feelings that remain, and in a shared history from which moral responsibility arises for us.

Today, responsibility for us means above all: listening, accompanying, strengthening – and providing support in such a way that it effectively improves the individual life situation of those affected. This requires dialogue, trust and cooperation on equal terms. Together, we keep the memory alive, share knowledge and work towards a future in which self-determination and recognition are central.

On this website, you will find information about the Thalidomide tragedy, the historical review, how dialogue and cooperation evolved, and the current support for those affected.

“More than 60 years ago, Grünenthal's sleep aid and sedative Thalidomide affected the lives of thousands of children and their families – through physical impairments and associated health, social and everyday hardships. The past cannot be undone. This makes it all the more important to improve the living conditions today, and in the future, of those affected.”

The Grünenthal Foundation for the Support of Thalidomide-Affected People

The Grünenthal Foundation for the Support of Thalidomide-Affected People was established in 2012 to sustainably improve the lives of those affected by Thalidomide. It supplements state benefits with in-kind support that promotes self-determination and participation in everyday life. The focus is on barrier-free kitchen and bathroom conversions, vehicle adaptations and personal assistance for activities outside the home. The Foundation team is in constant dialogue with those affected in order to understand their changing needs and provide help where it is most urgently needed.

The services of the Grünenthal Foundation are available worldwide to all those affected, provided they are recognised by the German Contergan Foundation or by other institutions using comparable criteria – for example, the UK’s Thalidomide Trust. Applications can be submitted via the Foundation’s website.
